Julie Neumann, a native of Baton Rouge, spent her time on the LSU campus becoming a four-year letter winner on the soccer team from 2003-07. Not only did Neumann excel athletically, but she also thrived in the classroom, earning SEC Academic Honor Roll honors twice in 2004 and 2005. For her career, Neumann appeared in 38, scored one goal and had an assist. Off the field, Neumann continued work hard in the classroom as she graduated with a degree in Biology earning Upper Division Honors Distinction from the LSU Honor’s College. In addition, she was only one of only five LSU student-athletes who received the Wally Pontiff Jr. Academic Excellence Award in 2006.

And then:

Neumann went on to earn her medical degree at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, where her journey to be a dual-threat in both the classroom and in sports. After she completed four years of medical school in New Orleans, she went on to complete her residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. During her time at Duke, she received the 2016 Award for Excellence in Orthopedic Research. Neumann was also on the medical team for the Duke men’s basketball team in 2015 when the Blue Devils won the national title. Her time of being a college athlete helped her relate to other athletes when they became her patients. After residency, Dr. Neumann worked on a year-long fellowship to earn her sports medicine specialty in Los Angeles. There, she had the opportunity to work with professional athletes from professional sports teams like the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The following year, she completed another yearlong fellowship, but this time specializing in the foot and ankle at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Her hard work and dedication earned her not one, but two specialties.

And now:

Neumann made her way back home after living in New Orleans, North Carolina, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City. Now, she works for the Bone and Joint Clinic in Baton Rouge. This is where her family lived, and there were good opportunities to put her specialties to work. “Most of my teammates from LSU are actually my patients now, so it is fun to see them and the different career paths that everyone has chosen,” she said. Neumann loves that she gets to treat patients of all ages and different orthopedic injuries.
