Rededication of the Bench By the Road: A Lesson in History
The LSU Athletics ACE Council Community Involvement Subcommittee directs your attention to an inspirational and educational community event at the McKinley High School Alumni Center on February 7th at 10:00am. Our own LSU Athletics Faculty Representative Dr. Lori Martin is helping to lead this event that honors the efforts and individuals who have worked to unite our community. The rededication ceremony for the Toni Morrison Society’s “Bench By The Road” serves as a reminder of the Baton Rouge Bus Boycott in 1953.
Longtime journalist, Edward Pratt, Mount Zion First Baptist Church, Friend Girls Book Club, and the 100 Collegiate chapters at LSU and Southern Universities, are among the recipients who will be presented with the Champions of Culture award. Chris Tyson, a longtime resident of Baton Rouge and President of the National Community Stabilization Trust (NCST) is the keynote speaker.
The event is free and open to the public. The event will feature participation from Mount Zion First Baptist Church Praise Dancers and guitarist, Alicia Hilaire, as well as a dance from the production, “Fading Line,” by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. There will also be a book signing by local authors, including the book, South Baton Rouge, by Lori Latrice Martin and Raymond A. Jetson. RSVP at mailto: drlorimartin@gmail.com
